Heads up – AOPA and the others did not prevail, so aircraft registrations now expire every 3 years… and cost money to renew, of course. But don’t think that just ‘cause you registered your new plane you have 3 more years, check and you'll find you don't!

Details below….

FAA Requires Aircraft Registration Renewals

July 19, 2010
By Mary Grady, Contributing editor

The FAA will now require re-registration of all civil aircraft over the next three years and renewal every three years after that, the agency said on Monday. A final rule (http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/2010/2010-17572.htm) published this week establishes specific expiration dates over a three-year period for all aircraft registered before Oct. 1, 2010, and requires re-registration of those aircraft according to a specific schedule (http://www.faa.gov/news/press_releases/news_story.cfm?newsId=11617). A fee of $5 will be collected for each registration and each renewal. The FAA will cancel the N-numbers of aircraft that are not re-registered or renewed. "These improvements will give us more up-to-date registration data and better information about the state of the aviation industry," said FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt. Current regulations require owners to report the sale of an aircraft, the scrapping or destruction of an aircraft, or a change in mailing address, but many ow ners have not complied with those requirements, the FAA said.

/ sarcasm on :Well, everyone else has a piece of the action...so why not? /sarcasm off

While $5 seems trivial now, that can always creep up over time to DMV standards...once they have the model in place.... *sigh*

Curiously finding all this crappola on the FAA's website will lead to massive disappointment--taint there--or it's so totally obscured that it can't be found.

Looks like LRB will be one of the first to renew, according to the schedule in the FAA's press release. On the positive side, however, if they follow their current re-registration of reserved N-numbers protocol, it will be an easy online credit card transaction.
